Designer Kate Spade Has Died Aged 55

Designer Kate Spade reportedly found dead from apparent suicide

Kate Spade, the designer behind kate spade NY, has died at age 55 of a reported suicide.

The NYPD confirmed that she was found unconscious and unresponsive due to an apparent suicide.

Spade was a co-founder of the designer label Kate Spade New York, which she later sold.

People reports 55-year-old was found by her housekeeper Tuesday morning in her New York City apartment; she reportedly left a note, although details are not being disclosed.

Spade is survived by her husband Andy, the older brother of actor David Spade.

In 2016 Spade and her husband launched a new line called Frances Valentine, named for their daughter.

Another thing Spade will be remembered for is her bags that were shaped like anything except a bag - from flamingo totes to pineapple clutches.

Born in Kansas City in Missouri in 1962, Spade served as the accessories editor at US women's magazine Mademoiselle before founding the brand Kate Spade in 1993.

"My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college", she wrote on Twitter.

Her work became a staple on the red carpet, and many celebrities donned her designs, from dresses and handbags to shoes and accessories. Then, it was sold again in 2017 to Coach's Tapestry Inc. for $2.4 billion. "Our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time", the statement read.

On social media, prominent figures mourned Spade's passing.

A representative for Kate Spade said in a statement, "We at Kate Spade New York just learned of the incredibly sad news that Kate Spade has passed". But Kate Spade wasn't frilly. "We want to honor her life and her major contribution to the fashion business and express our most honest condolences to the family". The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) provides 24/7, free, confidential support for people in distress, as well as best practices for professionals and resources to aid in prevention and crisis situations.

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former U.S. president Bill Clinton, tweeted: "My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college".

Bryce Dallas Howard, who served as a brand ambassador for Kate Spade in 2011, described how she was inspired by Spade. In one post he wrote: "Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos".
