Diego Schwartzman stops game on set point to get ailing spectator help

Richard Gasquet 'Nadal has a different game his intensity is monstrous'

Argentine Diego Schwartzman produced a remarkable fightback from two sets and a break down to beat Kevin Anderson 1-6 2-6 7-5 7-6 (0) 6-2 and reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the first time in his career on Monday.

Nadal had looked imperious on his way to a 12th quarter-final at Roland Garros, but the diminutive Schwartzman played with aggressive intent to rock the claycourt king.

The man who has lost just twice in 85 matches at Roland Garros was staring down the barrel of a shock defeat when the rain saved him.

Schwartzman slapped his racquet against the top of the net after missing a routine backhand volley with the court at his mercy to hand the Spaniard break point.

When Schwartzman broke in the third game of the second set, the alarm bells were ringing in the Nadal camp and although he quickly levelled he was immediately broken again.

That proved costly as Nadal broke and then repeated the trick to move into a 5-3, 30-15 lead.

He may have halted the mutiny for now but Nadal was strangely off-colour, unable to dictate the rallies as he usually does on clay.

The enforced interlude had clearly benefited Nadal, and assuming he gets the two points he needs to level the match he will start a strong favourite on Thursday. Both matches will have to be completed on Thursday and it will be interesting to see who will find the better momentum after such a long break, especially in the match between Nadal and Schwartzman where the Argentinian won the opening set, ending Nadal's streak of 37 consecutive sets won in Paris.

In the second quarter-final Marin Cilic and Juan Martin Del Potro were locked together at 5-5 in a first-set tiebreak.

Nadal, returning with his famed forehand finally firing on all cylinders, earned back-to-back breaks to move within a hold of the set.
