NKorea letter diplomacy is a throwback to a different era

After meeting with former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol, Trump announced that the Summit with North Korea will go forward.

Kim Yong Chol delivered a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump.

"What North Korean people want is anything to happen to crack that regime up, open that up", Kim said. Trump last week canceled the sit-down, but then quickly said it could get back on track.

North Korean military leader Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok delivered a letter to then U.S. president Bill Clinton at the White House in late 2000. Trump told reporters it was a "very nice letter. a very interesting letter".

After an informal dinner on Wednesday, Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol were meeting at the three-bedroom apartment residence of the U.S. deputy ambassador to the United Nations.

North Korean official Kim Yong Chol will meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later this week, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement quoted by the website.

"If these talks are successful, they will truly be historic", he said. "We sincerely hope that Chairman Kim Jong Un shares this positive vision for the future".

In the meantime, Kim Yong-chol, vice chairman of the North's Workers' Party and chief of the United Front Department, is visiting NY to help finalize an agenda for the summit.

Pompeo maintained that the United States would continue to demand a fully verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. They were placed on the country because of its nuclear program.

Mr Trump made the announcement after talks with a senior North Korean envoy at the White House. That would not be desirable for Pyongyang given its desire for a summit with Trump as soon as possible. Chol, together with his delegation from Pyongyang, touched down at the JFK International Airport. "It's a process. It's all a process".

However, his comments were the most positive from any United States official since the meeting was axed last week after belligerent statements from the North.

"Between now and if we're going to have a summit, they're going to have to make clear what they're willing to do". "Maybe a second and third - and maybe we'll have none".
