French Open 2018: Novak Djokovic beats Fernando Verdasco to reach quarter-finals

Novak Djokovic tennis news French Open

Djokovic, who arrived in the French capital short of form and confidence, has only lost one set on his run to the last eight of the tournament and will next meet Marco Cecchinato after the world No 72 defeated David Goffin 7-5 4-6 6-0 6-3.

In the women's quarterfinals, two Americans could win and set up a semifinal rematch of their U.S. Open final a year ago: No. 10 Sloane Stephens and No. 13 Madison Keys.

Cecchinato will now face 12-time Grand Slam victor Djokovic, who beat Fernando Verdasco 6-3 6-4 6-2.

The 12-time grand slam champion also matched Roger Federer's record of nine consecutiveappearances in the last eight at Roland Garroswith a dominant 6-3, 6-4, 6-2victory.

In the women's draw, Sloane Stephens faces Russia's Daria Kasatkina and Madison Keys plays Kazakh Yulia Putintseva. "It takes time to really understand the difference of being a part of the Grand Slam compared to other tournaments, because it is different". The more success Djokovic has, the scarier he becomes as a legit French Open contender.

He was suspended for 18 months by the Italian tennis federation in July 2016 before later being cleared of any wrongdoing. Thiem is the more experienced having been to the semis at Roland Garros twice before.

"Well, I'm young, so I might as well stay on court, get some practice and entertain you guys", smiled Zverev, who is bidding to become the first German man to win the French Open since 1937.

Thiem, the only man to beat Rafael Nadal on clay this year, held off a short-lived Nishikori revival on Court Philippe Chatrier to set up the meeting with Zverev.

Kazakhstan's Putintseva will be playing her second quarter-final at Roland Garros, but this time it has been more of a surprise after slipping to 98th in the world rankings.

The 23-year-old Kazakh has reached this stage before at a French Open, in 2016, but Keys has looked impressively consistent at Roland Garros this year and has yet to drop a set.

"Once you get to the second week, every match obviously has more nerves, and there's more on the line and all of that", said last year's US Open runner-up.

You know those things or people that stir really awful memories in you, and you'd rather just avoid them? The 34-year-old Verdasco will next face either his compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut or former champion Novak Djokovic for a quarter-final spot.

But the 10th seed will have to be wary of the unsafe Kasatkina, who saw off Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets to notch her third consecutive win over the Australian Open victor. "Maybe is a dream, because now I'm very happy for this match", said Cecchinato, the ninth Italian man to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final in the professional era.
