Trump tweets he wishes he picked someone other than Sessions for AG

Key Republican Trey Gowdy defends FBI against Trump attacks

A top backer of Trump campaign, Sessions made a decision to recuse himself from the Russian meddling probe after it was revealed that during the 2016 presidential election, he had not disclosed the "contacts" with the USA ambassador to Russia.

But former Obama administration intelligence officials and lawmakers rebuked Trump and downplayed his concerns, insisting that the informant didn't infiltrate the Trump campaign and wasn't really spying.

Mueller is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and whether members of Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation or attempted to obstruct justice.

Responding to the Times report on Tuesday, legal expert and former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti argued in a series of tweets that Trump's "repeated attempts to push Sessions to reassert control over the Russian Federation investigation" constitute "very strong evidence" that the president has obstructed justice.

The South Carolina Republican said the president is frustrated with Sessions because the attorney general did not tell him he would recuse himself from the Justice Department's election meddling probe.

On reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did inform Trump and Clinton of foreign adversaries trying to interfere: I think it's common sense that somebody, whether it'd be Russia, China, or somebody else that their might be someone who wants to do something nefarious.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday took a shot at U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "I think he should do it confidentially first, to give Mueller a chance to explain himself", Giuliani said.

Trump has also denounced Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt", and attacked the investigation in an effort to undermine it.

Gowdy emphasized the goal was to find out about Russia's interference in the election, not to spy on Trump's campaign - the opposite of what Trump has said.

Since that time, Trump has called Sessions "beleaguered" and in February referred to him as "Mr. Magoo" during a closed-door meeting reported by The Washington Post. Control of the investigation was shifted to Mueller when he was appointed special counsel after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

On Wednesday, Trump targeted Sessions again from his social media account by quoting Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and adding that he regretted choosing the former Senator for attorney general.

The Daily Show host then used Rudy Giuliani's admission that the Spygate push is meant to discredit the Mueller probe and that the "jury" should be "the American people".
