Trump wants to ban German cars from America

GETTYUS trade war Donald Trump is ready to ban German cars from the US says report

After being elected but before he took office, Trump also pledged to place a 35 percent tax on every German vehicle brought into the U.S.

Trump reportedly told French President Emmanuel Macron that he would continue to pursue tough trade policies, with the goal of stopping Mercedes-Benz models from driving down Fifth Avenue in NY, according to a WirtschaftsWoche report translated by CNBC.

"Trump's grudge against the German automaker - and especially against Mercedes models in NY - is not new".

A new report from a German magazine states President Donald Trump aims to push Mercedes-Benz, and other German luxury vehicle makers, out of the USA market.

Sources included diplomats from both the United States and Europe who cited that Trump told Macron that he would "maintain his trade policy until no Mercedes models rolled on Fifth Avenue in NY".

Trump said on Thursday that he would end tariff exemptions on steel and aluminum imported to the USA from the European Union and Canada.

President Donald Trump allegedly wants to ban imports of German-made vehicles or at least that's what he is telling foreign leaders.

The German automakers led the losses, with shares of luxury brands Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen all trading off around one percent. WirtschaftsWoche's article points out that just prior to his inauguration in 2017, Trump railed against the Mercedes-Benz vehicles he saw in NY. "Not too many, maybe none at all, you do not see anything over there, it's a one-way street".

The U.S. trade market has been rocky the past few months. Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz maintain large manufacturing presences here in the United States, in part because any vehicles they build and sell here are exempt from existing import tariffs.

At the time, the president called Germany a great auto producer but said that the business relationship with the United States was an unfair one-way street. Audi and BMW had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication.
