Tom Cruise back in the pilot's seat as Top Gun sequel begins

Written across the snap is one of the original film's most recognizable catchphrases: "Feel the need".

Cruise, 55, captioned the post with the hashtag #Day1, hinting that the crew has begun filming on the long-awaited sequel.

Tom Cruise has shared the first official photo from the set of the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, now titled Top Gun: Maverick.

The actor shared a teaser image of himself back in his famous role as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a striped helmet in his hand, staring across a runway at his Grumman F-14 Tomcat. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will follow Maverick and his crew as they deal with new technology.

Tom Cruise was spotted casually riding solo on a motorcycle Wednesday afternoon on set of the "Top Gun" sequel - "Top Gun: Maverick".

Once again, Tom Cruise is feeling the need.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first movie with the late Don Simpson, is back on board too, while it's thought that Val Kilmer could also be making an appearance as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. It was directed by Tony Scott, who had been working on the sequel with Cruise prior to Scott's death by suicide in 2012. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12, 2019.
