Zinedine Zidane leaves Real Madrid: All the reaction from his shock exit

Arsene Wenger is considering his next role

Zinedine Zidane has announced his resignation as Real Madrid head coach.

Aside from his three Champions League crowns, Frenchman Zidane won one La Liga title, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups since taking the reins at the Santiago Bernabéu in 2016.

Zidane's decision shocked much of the football world, with president Florentino Perez only informed yesterday, and Ronaldo was keen to thank his boss for their time together.

Zidane told a news conference that "everything changes" and "that's why I took this decision".

"This is a unusual moment but a very important moment", Zidane said. "The team needs to continue winning and needs a change", said the three-time Champions League victor.

"I love this club and the president who gave me the chance to play for this club and manage the club of my dreams, but everything changes and that is why I have taken the decision to leave".

Zidane said Thursday he felt it was the right moment - for him and for the club - to make a change.

"It's hard to keep going with things the same (way), winning three Champions Leagues".

There were murmurs throughout the season that Zidane could be heading for the exit door, with Madrid's campaign looking to unfold before him.

Now the second favourite for the job is ex-Madrid star Guti, who has been coaching Real Madrid youth teams ince 2013.

"Madrid has given everything to me and I will be close to this club for the rest of my life", Zidane, a former Real player, said. I want to thank the fans, who always supported me both as a coach and a player. "All I can offer is my love and respect and remind him that this is his home".

In an interesting sub-plot, the France national job was considered the 68-year-old's most likely next position but he would face fierce competition for the prospective vacancy should Zidane be interested.

"This is "until soon" as I have no doubt that you will be back".

"Perez may now appoint Guti: it would be his own decision, he wants to show he can do radical choices as he did three years ago with Zidane".
