Valerie Jarrett says Roseanne's tweet should be 'teaching moment'

Roseanne apologises to Obama adviser and quits twitter

Barr later deleted the tweet.

A freaky tweet that savaged former Obama administration advisor Valerie Jarrett, who is black, as the byproduct of "muslim brotherhood and planet of the apes had a baby" was the last straw for ABC amid a gathering storm of outrage online calling for ABC to cancel the show. Within hours, ABC announced it was cancelling the show, a stunning turnaround for the sitcom revival that drew in more than 18 million viewers in its debut and resulted in an immediate second-season renewal.

The Roseanne reboot premiered to record ratings for the network in March, totaling over 27.2 million telecast viewers according to Forbes. The team behind the show had already speculated about bringing back previous guest stars, with hopes to bring back Johnny Galecki and even George Clooney.

One of season 1's consultants, comedian Wanda Sykes, tweeted Tuesday that she would not be returning to the series following Barr's racist tweet, joining a growing chorus of stars who've written off Barr, including Mark Hamill, Debra Messing, Ike Barinholtz, Don Cheadle and Julianne Moore. "I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but...don't defend it please. ty", she tweeted.

When the only people who would consider your comment a joke are racist lunatics, you have to reconsider your definition of the word "joke". She then tweeted that she was leaving Twitter.

Jarrett noted that while she was the target of Barr's tweet, it's people who experience "ordinary examples of racism" who "don't have a circle of friends and followers" to come to their defense in certain moments, such as getting shouted at while walking down the street, for whom she's concerned.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the network's parent company, Disney, said the cancellation "was the right thing" to do, and Barr was dropped by ICM Partners, the talent agency that represented her.

Jarret is yet to respond to Barr's apology tweet, but earlier, speaking on MSNBC, said: "I'm fine".

I'm glad she was wrong.

Renowned producer Shonda Rhimes said the firing is in line with a key lesson she teaches her four-year-old: we are all responsible for our actions. The civil rights leader tweeted thanks to ABC, saying the network did the right thing.

Some commenters connected her behavior to Trump-era intolerance and said ABC was helping to normalize racism by supporting her show.

Three weeks earlier, Roseanne was the toast of ABC's annual presentation of its programming plans to advertisers. This apology is meaningless.

ABC canceled the show in a one-sentence statement from Channing Dungey, the network's entertainment president, who called it "abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values".
