Alberto after landfall: Threat of heavy rains, flooding

Memorial Day weather forecast: Warm, muggy day with an uncertain afternoon

The violence of the storm was also felt in Cuba where a bridge in Taguasco collapsed after drenching rains caused the Zaza River to rise.

Forecasters cautioned that heavy rain and tropical storm conditions could reach the northern Gulf Coast well ahead of the center of Alberto making landfall. "There's not going to be a lot of grilling or boating going on - it's going to be messy". As the center of Alberto pulls north and slightly west, the tail is forecast to swing toward South Florida. As a result, western North Carolina will see the heaviest rains. The persistent rain associated with Alberto's tail is just offshore of South Florida Monday and south of the Florida Keys. One to four hurricanes could be "major" with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

Meteorologists are predicting a warm and muggy Memorial Day, with a chance of showers later in the day. Even still, there will be some scattered showers or storms around, but the coverage should be less widespread than previous days. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper urged residents to take all precautions.

Deadly hurricanes in the United States and the Caribbean a year ago caused billions of dollars in damage, massive power outages and devastation to hundreds of thousands of structures.

Janet Rhumes and her group of friends from Kansas had been planning their Memorial Day weekend on Navarre Beach since October. Lifeguards posted red flags along the white sands of Pensacola Beach, where swimming and wading were banned due to high surf and unsafe conditions.

Alberto, the first storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, spawned scattered flooding in Alabama as it weakened into a subtropical depression on Tuesday, a day after two journalists were killed in North Carolina when a tree fell on their vehicle.

Rough conditions were whipping up big waves off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast, and authorities warned swimmers to stay out of the surf because of life-threatening swells and rip currents.

Jeffrey Medlin, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service's Mobile office, warned that even after the storm passes there will still be swells that could cause risky rip currents.

The area was part of the Southeast region under a flash flood watch expected to remain in effect through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

It is forecast to produce rainfall totals of 4-8 inches in the Florida Panhandle with isolated totals of 12 inches.

As a subtropical storm, Alberto had a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds were found farther from its center. Subtropical storms can develop into tropical storms, which in turn can strengthen into hurricanes. That tropical moisture will make its way into North Carolina Monday and Tuesday.
