Trump: Plan for June summit with North Korea 'hasn't changed'

"Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the summit between Kim Jong Un and myself", Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday. Trump pulled out of the meeting Kim Jong Un last week, but then said a day later that it could get back on track. They discussed their shared goal of achieving "the complete and permanent dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missile programs".

He told reporters Friday that "everybody plays games", and said: "They very much want to do it, we want to do it, we'll see what happens".

But on Saturday, Trump said he was still looking at a June 12 date for a summit in Singapore, adding that talks were progressing very well.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, expanded further on Saturday, saying officials were still heading to Singapore to coordinate logistics. "So the US could ask the North to take actions that clearly show its determination, which would also need to be reciprocated".

The U.S. team was being led by former United States Special Representative for North Korea Policy Sung Kim, the Post reported, while the DPRK team was led by Vice Foreign-Minister Choe Son Hui.

Mr Moon said he and Mr Kim had "agreed that the 12 June summit should be held successfully" and that the North Korean leader had "again made clear his commitment to a complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

Moon's surprise meeting with Kim on Saturday shows he's willing to do what it takes to keep diplomacy on track and avoid a return to threats of war over North Korea's nuclear program.

Analysts say the USA had wanted denuclearisation first - followed by rewards in the form of lifted sanctions and economic aid.

Moon said on Monday there could be more impromptu talks between the two Koreas in the lead-up to the summit.

"Trump's unexpected response totally took Kim by surprise and left the North scrambling to find a way to mend things", Cho Sung-ryul, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Strategy, told AFP. Mr. Moon said Sunday that the North's disarmament could be still be a hard process even if Pyongyang, Washington and Seoul don't differ over what "complete denuclearization" of the peninsula means.

Analysts say that the North will most importantly need iron-clad security guarantees if it is to genuinely give up its nuclear weapons.

North Korea has been subjected to numerous rounds of worldwide sanctions since 2006, which has cut off most of its exports and capped its imports of oil.

Australian man Howard turns heads dressed as Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

"Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting", he wrote, but soon after suggested talks could still go ahead.

In fact, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported Monday, citing USA officials, . that Washington is asking Pyongyang to first transfer the 20 nuclear warheads it is believed to have.to somewhere outside of its borders as soon as possible.

A meeting between Trump and Abe could come on the sidelines of the Group of 7 economic summit in Quebec from June 8 to 9, but it is also possible that Abe will swing by Washington en route to that conference, a Japanese official said.
