Joao Sousa on EU General Data Protection Regulation

Facebook and Google at top of GDPR complaints list

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area.

Despite not being a mandatory tool for GDPR, CMPs are being adopted by data controllers on a massive scale to optimize user consent management. Max Schrems was quoted by BBC to have said, "Many users do not know yet that this annoying way of pushing people to consent is actually forbidden under GDPR in most cases".

"Over the last 18 months, we have taken steps to update our products, policies and processes to provide users with meaningful data transparency and control across all the services that we provide in the EU", Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said in an emailed statement.

"It's clear in the law - there are decisions by European data protection authorities and guidelines that this (practice) is prohibited", he said. "Over the last 18 months, we have taken steps to update our products, policies, and processes to provide users with meaningful data transparency and control across all the services that we provide in the European Union".

Alphabet Inc's Google sought to ease online publisher concerns on Thursday about the effects European data privacy rules going into effect in just a few hours will have on their ad business.

The new law, however, is susceptible to different interpretations. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the biggest overhaul of data privacy laws in over 20 years, organizations must have transparent justification for processing personal data, starting Friday. In addition to The Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times, newspapers including The New York Daily News, The Orlando Sentinel and The Baltimore Sun were also unavailable to readers in Europe. The new regulations mean you will be able to see exactly what data a GDPR-compliant business has on you and, as long as it's a "reasonable request", the company has to supply you with that information within 90 days.

"Folks like Microsoft and Apple are figuring 'well, if we have to rearrange our whole privacy policy for them over there, we can make it apply to Americans, as well, '" Carey said.

Between January 2017 and March 2018, there has also been a spike in the number of job postings for Data Protection roles, which have seen an increase of 143 per cent, while the number of job searches for the same have risen by 188 per cent. It gives consumers a much greater say on how, and if, their personal data is used. But how does this new law affect those in the United States and other countries?

Four EU citizens filed the complaints with local regulators in Belgium, Austria, Germany and France. Microsoft views privacy as a fundamental human right, he said, adding that trust is more important than ever as people exchange data.

The airline then provides a link to the new privacy policy that, as stipulated under GDPR, entails the kind of data Kenya Airways collects on users and for what goal written in easy-to-understand English.

So take control of your data. or don't. Alas, no. There are plenty of fly-by-night operators who do not care about GDPR, and some local companies with no business in the European Union will likely continue to pester you.

But legal challenges filed in Europe accused Google and Facebook of failing to abide by the new law.
