Census: St. Johns County is nation's 14th fastest-growing county

Hempstead Town Hall

"That is a pretty big role in the population change".

Hempstead Town gained the most people among Long Island's 13 towns from 2016 to 2017, according to new U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for cities, towns and villages released Thursday. NY is still easily the nation's largest city with 8,622,698 residents as of last July. This spring, journalists in both cities got into a spirited back-and-forth over which one reigned supreme - including mention of the census count - when Houston announced it was getting its own version of the Bean.

When measured by percentage growth, the Phoenix suburb of Buckeye ranked fifth in the nation at 5.9 percent.

Meanwhile, Houston, the most populous city in Texas, only grew by an estimated 8,235 people.

The Chicago region is expected the reverse the recent population loss and grow through 2030, according to Alden Loury, director of research at the Metropolitan Planning Council.

For the first time, Redmond reached more than 30,000 residents and Prineville hit more than 10,000, the census data showed.

New Braunfels also saw the fifth-largest percentage population growth in the nation since 2010, joining three other suburban Texas cities (Cedar Park, McKinney, and Frisco) in the top five for population growth over almost a decade.

That increase was down from the previous year, when Phoenix led the nation by adding 32,113 people. But this year, the 2016 number was updated to reflect a loss of 4,879 residents.

"I think it's too soon to tell if the trend will change", Frey said. "The Great Recession put the brakes on dispersal to small metro areas, suburbs and the Sun Belt; but those trends are beginning to resume again". Also losing population were St. Louis, Chicago, Anchorage and Pittsburgh. As of July 1, 2017, those estimates are now down to 25,480, making Clinton the 18th-biggest city in Iowa.

For San Antonio, that growth represents 1.6 percent, ranking 144th in percentage population growth out of the surveyed cities. According to its estimates, Eugene is clearly no. 2 in the state, population-wise.

"San Antonio, Texas, tops the list with the largest population gain with an increase of over 24,200 people", said Amel Toukabri, a demographer with the Census Bureau.

But say what you will about Seattle, you can't say that people don't want to live here.

New York City's overall population grew slightly between 2016 and 2017, but 143,000 more people moved out than moved in. The difference between 861,542 in 2016 and 869,666 in 2017 works out to a 0.94 percent increase.
