Pompeo declares U.S. will 'crush' Iran allies

European banks should "safeguard trade" with Tehran.

Mr Pompeo, in his first major foreign policy address since becoming the top U.S. diplomat, vowed to "crush" Iran's proxies and operatives around the world.

Pompeo's vision: On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded all signatories negotiate a fresh treaty that would encompass not only Iran's nuclear program, but its defense and foreign policies as well.

The announcement of these conditions comes a day after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Washington was working on the "strongest sanctions in history" to be imposed on Iran.

On May 8, Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that European powers must protect Iranian oil sales from USA pressure and continue buying Iranian crude, and must promise they would not seek new talks on Iran's missile program and regional activities.

"We have no conflicts with regard to these three countries [United Kingdom, France and Germany]; but we do not trust them, based on previous experience", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday at a meeting with representatives of the three branches of the Iranian government.

"Europe should fully guarantee Iran's oil sales".

He said: "We can not let the United States flout worldwide law, their behaviour towards Iran is unacceptable".

Pompeo said if Iran were to abide by stricter terms, including ending its ballistic missile programme and its interventions in regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria, the United States would lift its new sanctions.

Israel praised the Trump administration's decision to pull out of the pact but the move was roundly criticised by fellow signatories, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Russian Federation.

On relations with Europeans, the Leader said that Iran does not seek confrontation with Europe, but the UK, France and Germany showed that they will follow the U.S. in sensitive issues. The other two signatories to the deal, China and Russian Federation, also want to maintain it.

He said Iran must stop uranium enrichment and not seek the processing of plutonium.

Earlier on May 23, Pompeo reiterated his tough stance toward Iran in testimony before a House committee.

Mr Pompeo has made clear he expects the backing of his allies in Europe but also called for support from "Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea [and] the UAE".

Iran also agreed to modify a heavy water facility so it could not produce plutonium suitable for a bomb.

Under the deal, struck between Iran the US, UK, Russia, France, China, and Germany, Terhan agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Asked whether any companies would receive waivers from the sanctions, Pompeo demurred, noting that penalties would snap back in full in 90 and 180 days, depending on the provision.
