Chiefs fans weigh in on new National Football League policy banning sideline anthem protests

How the NFL's new anthem policy compares to other sports leagues

In an attempt to quell a controversy that engulfed the country's most popular sport last fall, the NFL altered its policy regarding the national anthem, no longer requiring players to be on the field during its playing before games but allowing teams and the league to impose discipline for those who protest publicly during the song.

The league's Commissioner, Roger Goodell, announced the new policy through Twitter.

York has been supportive of protesting players as well, and suggested to reporters on Wednesday he's considering stopping concession sales during the anthem: "I don't think we should be profiting if we're going to put this type of attention and focus on the field and on the flag", he said.

"I'm glad they came to an agreement", Quarterback Dak Prescott said. "And that's a moment that we want to make sure is done in a very respectful fashion". There were deep partisan divisions within this group, though among both independents and Democrats, rallygoers were more likely to say anthem protests were appropriate than people who did not attend rallies themselves.

Antonio Sabato Jr, a former soap star and model who is running as a Republican for a congressional seat in California, said it was "sad" the league had to have a policy to ensure players stood for the anthem.

The new guidelines also say that teams will be fined if players are on the field and "do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem".

The owners spent several hours addressing the contentious issue - which made it all the way to the White House.

"If the team says 'this is what we're doing, ' and ownership (does too), you either deal with it or you're probably going to get cut", Pittsburgh Steelers guard Ramon Foster said. "If somebody [on the Jets] takes a knee, that fine will be borne by the organization, by me, not the players". The NFL hasn't gone that far, but Kaepernick has yet to land another job and one of his former teammates and fellow protester safety Eric Reid is also out of work.

While the owners touted the change as a compromise that everyone should get behind, the union expressed immediate skepticism. They do not have anyone on the current roster who was a part of the protest.

However, Christopher Johnson, chairman of the New York Jets, said he will not stop his players from continuing to take a knee on the field during the national anthem.

Johnson has no such issues, and intends on supporting his players. "Of course. But I understand if they felt the need to protest", he said. So if you really think about it, they defined the right to not stand for the national anthem.

By a 69 percent to 22 percent margin, more African-Americans said protests of the national anthem were acceptable than not.

"If we want to be sacrosanct, if we want to honor the flag, we've got to make sure we go through a litany of things", he said.

The NFL Players Association said it was not consulted during the development of the new policy.

"I think that we've listened to a lot of different viewpoints including our fans over the past year, and I think this policy attempts to come out in a place where we respected everybody's point of view on this as best we could", Steelers Owner Art Rooney II said. But the anthem issue is clearly one where the owners don't all see eye-to-eye. Lurie, who called Trump's presidency "disastrous", cautioned against players getting drawn into the president's tactics. "There's no penalty for that, but we're going to encourage all of them to be on field. We want people to stand", said Goodell, who dismissed concerns about the lack of union involvement by contending the league met with countless players over the past year. "But obviously not. So we have to deal with it as players, for good or a bad thing".
