Confirmation vote for Central Intelligence Agency nominee exposes Democratic rift

Senate intelligence committee endorses CIA nominee Haspel GOP pushes for speedy confirmation vote

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted Wednesday to advance the nomination of Gina Haspel to be CIA director, setting up a confirmation vote in the full Senate that Haspel is poised to win.

The Intelligence Committee voted 10-5 to forward her nomination to the entire Senate, virtually assuring that she will earn final approval to lead the U.S. spy agency, replacing Mike Pompeo, who is now Secretary of State.

"Gina Haspel is the most qualified person the President could choose to lead the CIA and the most prepared nominee in the 70 year history of the Agency", Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) said in a statement. In our opinion, she is exactly the right person to make sure our country has the valuable foreign intelligence needed to keep national leaders well informed so that they can properly protect the American people.

Haspel denounced the torture program in a latter to Sen.

Sen. Angus King, the independent from ME, also voted against Haspel at the committee, saying he felt she was not forthcoming about her role in the torture program. "Most importantly, I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the President if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture".

The panel voted 10-5 in favor of Gina Haspel in a closed session Wednesday.

But she has also had strong support from the White House, and many current and former intelligence officials. Haspel now has more than enough support to win confirmation, as Warner was one of three Democrats to announce Tuesday that they were voting for her, bringing the total to five.

The committee's eight Republicans were joined by Democrats Mark Warner of Virginia and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Haspel's nomination has been marred by her involvement in the CIA's torture program, which involved detaining suspected terrorists without due process and using torture techniques to obtain information.

She is expected to have enough votes to be confirmed on the Senate floor.

She has promised Congress she would not initiate any new detention or interrogation programs as Central Intelligence Agency director and penned a letter to Warner that said the Central Intelligence Agency should not have undertaken the interrogation program, which many have deemed tantamount to torture.

"There is a legal and moral responsibility that comes with operating in secrecy", Sen. "My questions about Ms. Haspel's role in the destruction of videotapes relevant to discussions occurring in Congress regarding the program have not been adequately answered". The split makes it crucial for Haspel to get support from the opposition to cross the 51 threshhold for confirmation. So president [Donald] Trump nominated her. President Trump says erroneously 'torture works, ' and we'll do waterboarding and worse. Trump, on the other hand says waterboarding and "a lot more" is what he demands.

In an interview, Gerald Staberock, secretary general of the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), said Haspel's expected confirmation is a "terrible message by the USA that torture is not a crime".

7 may Haspel, who held the position of Deputy head of the CIA, was appointed acting Director of the Agency after former leader Mike Pompeo endorsed for the position of Secretary.
