Everyone is familiar with DC's "Superman" comics and films.

The late actress rose to fame in 1978 for her portrayal of journalist and Superman's love interest, Lois Lane, opposite Christopher Reeve.

Kidder got her start in Hollywood with the 1968 film The Best Damn Fiddler From Calabogie To Kalada. At the age of 14, she made her first suicide attempt, noting in her diary that she had extreme mood swings and that things would be bad one day, but fine the next.

"We continued to have fun together over the last 40 years and she was a joy to be around", in view of her 5,000 Twitter followers. The Guardian reported she was an active member of the "peace movement" for several years.

"The crew would be embarrassed". He was complicated, very smart, really smart, and he knew he'd done something meaningful.

Both would remain known nearly entirely for their Superman roles, and struggled to find other major parts. It also led to a leading role in one of the horror smashes of American cinema that during the decade, The Amityville Horror (1979). For fans of Yuletide terror, she memorably played the "bad girl" Barb in Black Christmas (1974).

And courage. Kidder was intelligent and articulate; she had a magnetic personality - and the world's sexiest laugh - but above all, she was courageous in addressing mental health issues.

That struggle became public in 1996 when she was found dazed and filthy in a yard not far from the studio where she once filmed parts of Superman. Kidder recalled her childhood in northern Canada, saying, "We didn't have movies in this little mining town". "After it was over, I totally understood the need to abolish the stigma attached to people with thought disorders", she told the Chicago Tribune in 2001. Kidder was an activist and challenged the Iraq War.
