Conte "wasn't able" to keep Chelsea determined vs

Toni Kroos

Chelsea's failure to qualify for next season's Champions League was confirmed as they completed a disappointing Premier League campaign by collapsing to a dismal 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has said the departure of the team's former Technical Director Mike Emenalo made the season hard for the Blues.

Aside from being a rock at the back, Florian Lejeune made a vital assist for Newcastle's third of the night, which effectively sealed all three points for the Magpies.

Chelsea were supposed to be the side chasing a prize at the end of the day, but there was no way of telling in the first as Newcastle, hungrier and more aggressive, really took the game to the outgoing Premier League champions.

That makes Chelsea's lifeless display all the more worrying. Newcastle continued in the ascendency, riding every Chelsea challenge; Shelvey saw another well-struck effort whistle past the post before Perez went close just before halftime. That may well have been his final Premier League game in charge of this football club, and it epitomised everything that's gone wrong for him this season. However, he was later replaced by Joselu at the start of the second half, due to an injury.

Newcastle United pummelled a hapless Chelsea team 3-0 in the final game of the season and gave their supporters the flawless end of season gift.

Even the FA Cup would not render this season a success for Chelsea, but Conte will have been concerned by the total lack of appetite shown by his players.

Isaac Hayden (7/10): Came on for the highly influential Jonjo Shelvey in the final phase of the game as he helped his team comfortably see out their lead against Chelsea.

When asked why the Nigerian's departure affected the team, Conte said, "Yes".

Benitez said: "If we want to achieve something, we have to understand the way to do that".

"I have worked with my players this season and I think it's not right to say something about this because there are other people to judge our season and judge the problem of finishing out of the Champions League".

He has 12 months left on his current contract, and when questioned about his future, the former Italy coach added: "I have a contract, I'm committed and the club know very well the situation. With good spells and bad spells through the season we are happy to finish 10th".
