Watch The Trailer For Spike Lee's 'BLACKkKLANSMAN'

It's the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Based on the trailer, it appears Lee has managed to make both a fun and entertaining buddy cop movie and a topical and political film that he's built his career on.

Take a look at the trailer for the upcoming film below. In spite of the period-piece nature of the film, it is fully contemporary, ending with footage of Donald Trump's statements about the Charlottesville riot.

Hit: Spike Lee premiered his new movie BlacKkKlansman at the Cannes Film Festival Monday night to rapturous applause and a six-minute standing ovation.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw was less receptive to the film, saying: "It's an entertaining spectacle but the brilliant tonal balance in something like Jordan Peele's satire Get Out leaves this looking a little exposed". He also remade his 1986 comedy She's Gotta Have It as a Netflix series in 2017. It was among the most highly anticipated titles at Cannes this year and immediate reaction was positive. That, of course, required the help of another fellow (white) cop, played in the film by Adam Driver, who steps into "play" Stallworth when it's time to meet the hate group.

Both BlacKkKlansman and Pope Francis will be released by Focus Features, the former on August 10, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the deadly Charlottesville riots.
