Russian Bombers Intercepted By US F-22 Fighters Near Alaska — USNORTHCOM

Two F-22 fighter jets from the 3rd Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Alaska conduct approach training in this U.S. Air Force

CNN reports that two Russian TU-95 "Bear" bombers were intercepted and turned back by US F-22 stealth fighters around 10 a.m. eastern time Friday morning.

The Russian long-range bombers flew into the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends approximately 200 miles off Alaska's western coast.

U.S. F-22 stealth fighters intercepted two bombers off the coast of Alaska on Friday, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The U.S. fighter jets did not get closer than 100 meters to the Russian bombers, the Russian military was quoted as saying.

Miller said that the Russian aircraft were seen near the coast of Alaska in the West of the American state, however, long-range bombers did not violate the established territorial agreements, in airspace over global waters.

They said the bombers were escorted by fighter jets and a reconnaissance jet that also acts as an anti-submarine platform.

The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news website, first reported the intercept. In January, a Russian Russian Su-27 came within 1.5 meters of a U.S. Navy surveillance plane while it was flying in worldwide airspace over the Black Sea.

It was not clear if the Russian air operation was an opportunity for real-world training or if it was in response to USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military operations elsewhere.

It is the first incident of the kind since United States jets intercepted Russian aircraft over a year ago on May 3, 2017.

Friday's incident was relatively routine, but more aggressive maneuvers have anxious defense officials and diplomats who said the encounters may eventually cause collisions or miscalculations that lead to a shoot-down.
