UFC 224 results: Nunes breaks Pennington's nose and retains title

Amanda Nunes

While Nunes maintained control for the majority of the second round, Pennington was finally able to drag the fight to the ground with about a minute to go, although she didn't do much with it except maintain the position before the fighters worked their way back to the feet a few seconds remaining. The cardio of Nunes seems to no longer be in question, as she looked fresh as a daisy entering the "championship rounds". Amanda Nunes of Brazil has beaten American Raquel Pennington to defend her UFC bantamweight title for the third time.

Nunes saw off Pennington's challenge with absolute ease, registering a fifth-round TKO victory over the Colorado native. Nunes took her down and landed hammerfists until the bout was stopped.

Clearly perturbed by being taken down in the second round, Nunes marched forward even more in the third, though she finally encountered some tough resistance. Pennington wrapped up the arms of Nunes to avoid any damage. Unfortunately, a severe leg injury slowed Pennington's pace and put her out of action for over a year and a half. The fight was stood back up. For the first time, Nunes is a favorite - and a big favorite at that. The Brazilian star in the making connected on a huge overhand right and used it to set up a rear-naked choke finish at 2:26 of the opening round.

Nunes is rightly considered a huge favourite in this fight, but this is mixed martial arts... literally anything can happen! Nunes tripped her opponent to send her to the mat.

Pennington wanted to retire after the fourth round with an apparent broken nose, but returned to fight the fifth after her corner talked her into it.

"Definitely this fight I'm going to make a statement". She repeatedly followed leg kicks with head blows early on, backing Pennington up to the edge of the Octagon and leaving the outside of her left leg bright purple and red from the repeated strikes. A ton of blood poured from Pennington's nose.
