Uber Opens Selection for City to Implement Flying Taxis

JetBlue says it will fly New York City pizza to people in Los Angeles and deliver it right to your door

From flying taxis to package delivery drones, the project's ultimate goal is to build the foundations of a small aircraft transport system destined for both passengers and cargo.

Doubts have emerged about plans by tech giant Uber to test flying cars during the Dubai's Expo 2020 event after the company launched a search for an worldwide city to launch operations.

Utilizing the knowledge of NASA engineers, Uber claims it can get the program up and running quickly.

Uber's holding a big conference today in Los Angeles, Uber Elevate, to share more about its ambitions to launch a flying taxi service.

At this year's summit, Uber unveiled yet another flying auto concept, this one being a four-passenger vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) fixed-wing aircraft, with vertical rotors fixed to those wings, giving an overall design that's not dissimilar to the quadcopters that have become popular in recent years.

NASA and Uber Technologies have just signed a second space act agreement to strengthen their collaboration in the field of urban air mobility (UAM), the US space agency announced yesterday.

Uber aims to run a network, called uberAir, of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft across the most densely populated cities in the world.

The move is being looked at as Uber attempting to work as closely as possible with the government as it looks to make its flying taxi project a reality.

Private companies were not the only ones ruling the circuit as Uber will team up with U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Army Research Lab.

NASA says this agreement represents the first to primarily hone in on urban air mobility operations. Meantime, aircraft manufacturers at the summit displayed prototypes of the VTOLs they're developing. And it's partnering with NASA to create a new air traffic control system (Financial Times). Uber has previously said that its flying taxis will fly below 10,000 ft (3,000 m).

As 2020 is the year that Uber plans to start demonstrations of its flying taxi service, beginning with pilots in Dubai, Dallas and Los Angeles, such a timeline does seem like a huge overreach at the moment. but hey, that hasn't exactly stopped Uber before.
