Karnataka registers 72.13 % turnout, better than last election in 2013

Karnataka Assembly Elections Polling Underway CM Siddaramaiah Calls BJP’s Yeddyurappa Mentally Disturbed

Polling was held for 222 of the state's 224 constituencies following the countermanding of election for the Jayanagara seat due to the death of BJP candidate B N Vijaykumar, and deferment of voting for R R Nagar seat over allegations of electoral malpractices.

PM "influencing" voters with Nepal temple visits: Cong The Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to "influence" voters on the polling day through his temple visits in Nepal. "His party is not going to cross 70 seats", Yeddyurappa said with a smile on his face. The way the BJP workers prepared the ground for the party through their sheer hard work, the stage is set for BJP to form the next government, " he said.

Most of the exit polls have predicted that none of the three major political parties will be able to get a majority in the state.

Mr Yeddyurappa himself resigned from his post as chief minister in 2012 amid allegations that he abused his power.

While most candidates, including chief minister Siddaramaiah, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) chief minister aspirant BS Yeddyurappa and Janata Dal (Secular)'s HD Kumaraswamy visited temples before casting their votes, others were more particular. Both, the BJP and the Congress, ran coalition governments with the JD (S) between 2004 and 2008.

However, various Exit polls conducted by visual media on Saturday had predicted a fractured mandate.

NDTV's Exit Poll said BJP will be single largest party with 98 seats, Congress second largest party with 88 seats, and JD (S) will be a Kingmaker with 33 seats. The party has a limited presence in the four other southern states, where it is unlikely to contest an election without a regional ally.

ABP News- C Voter said Congress might win 82-94, BJP 101-113, JDS+ 18-31, Others 1-8. This was perhaps the first time a news channel had commissioned two exit polls. While this gives 39 per cent of the vote share to the Congress, it gives 35 per cent vote share and a range of 79-92 seats to the BJP.

However, Bengaluru's adjacent constituencies top the charts, with Hosakote seeing a voter turnout of 89.97%, a marginal decrease from the 90.97% it had recorded in 2013 when it had recorded the state's highest turnout.

Mr Yeddyurappa said he had been in politics for 40 years and toured the entire state for three times before the polls.

Voters wait in a queue to cast their ballot outside a polling station during Karnataka assembly elections in Bengaluru.
