At least 9 killed in 3 church explosions in Indonesia

A damaged motorbike is seen at the scene outside a church following a suicide bomb in Surabaya

Egypt has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on a number of churches in Indonesia's second biggest city Surabaya, leaving at least nine persons killed and 40 others injured. No one has yet claimed responsibility.

"In total 13 people are being treated at the hospital".

The first explosion took place at Santa Maria Tak Bercela Church. "It was a suicide bombing".

Indonesia has had some major successes tackling militancy inspired by al Qaeda's attacks on the United States in 2001.

According to Reuters, at least three suicide bombers detonated themselves in Indonesia's Surabaya City in East Java on Sunday.

Mangera told the AP that minutes later, a second explosion went off at the Christian Church of Diponegoro and a third explosion went off at the Pantekosta Church. A large blast was heard hours after the attacks, which Mr Mangera said was a bomb disposal squad dealing with a device.

While most of the victims were members of the churches' congregations, the police also found the perpetrator among the deceased at SMTB church.

Although the country is majority Muslim in its population, there is a significant population of Buddhists, Hindus and Christians; the latter being specifically targeted in recent months.

Asked who he thought were the brains behind the attacks, Purwano said: "Still the old group, JAD, who has planned this for sometime". In recent years, the country has faced a new threat as the rise of IS in the Middle East invigorated local militant networks.

A gun and suicide attack in the capital Jakarta left four attackers and four civilians dead in January 2016, and was the first assault claimed by IS in Southeast Asia. But former National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Ansyaad Mbai said the bombings in Surabaya could be linked to the riot that occurred at a detention center at the National Police's Mobile Brigade headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Depok, West Java.
