Congo announces 1st confirmed death from Ebola outbreak

Four new suspected Ebola cases surface in Congo

Only two cases have been confirmed as Ebola, by a laboratory in the capital Kinshasa.

"But, what is also particularly important was that on Monday, blood samples from five patients in a particular district in DRC, in two of the five cases, Ebola was actually confirmed". Over 21 suspected viral haemorrhagic fever and 17 deaths have been reported around Ilkoko Iponge in the past five weeks.

"I think it is an epidemic that we will quickly master".

A team of experts from the WHO, Doctors without Borders (DRC) and Equateur province travelled to Bikoro on Tuesday to beef up coordination and carry out investigations, it said.

A team of epidemiologists, logisticians, clinicians, and other infection experts are expected to be deployed in the coming days.

World Health Organization has allocated $1 million from its Emergency Contingency Fund to support response activities over the next three months.

Ebola is endemic to Congo, a vast country whose eastern Ebola river gave the deadly virus its name when it was discovered there in the 1970s.

"The first step in containing this outbreak is to understand the extent of transmission, ensure care for people infected, engage communities and trace contacts".

The latest outbreak comes less than a year after the DRC's last recorded Ebola outbreak in May last year.

Neighbouring countries have been alerted about the new outbreak. MedlinePlus website, Ebola is "severe" and "often fatal".

Reuters noted that Ebola is believed to be spread over long distances by bats as the animals can host the virus without dying.

A new outbreak of the disease has been confirmed by the DRC Ministry of Health in the north-west of the country, near the town of Ikoko Impenge, next to the town of Bikoro.

"Working with partners and responding early and in a coordinated way will be vital to containing this deadly disease", added Salama, who is the WHO Deputy-Director Emergency Preparedness and Response. WHO will work closely with health authorities and partners to support the national response.

A study released a year ago also suggested disease "superspreaders" fueled the transmission of the 2014 Ebola epidemic.

Ebola is a popular disease among the Nigerian locals as there were cases of the virus being reported in Nigeria - but was swiftly handled by the Nigerian authorities.
