Twitter testing end-to-end encrypted messaging

Is Twitter taking Snowden’s advice? ‘Encrypted message feature’ spotted in Android app

Twitter also has the feature of the encrypted messaging, which if launched would make the social media platform a better home for communication. It's been about more than a year when Edward Snowden pressed Twitter to add an end-to-end encryption to it's direct messaging. Until now, that is.

It also suggests that Twitter may shortly compete directly with services like Facebook-possessed WhatsApp, which allows one off and set conversations with end to end encryption. The code was first spotted by Jane Manchun Wong, a computer science student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

In 2016, Snowden requested "burn-after-reading DMs, ' to which Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said the idea was 'reasonable and something we'll think about".

This allows users' to exchange end-to-end encrypted messages, which finally lines up Twitter with other secure messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal. "Encryption", for the uninitiated, is just a fancy term for "secure".

18 months later, Twitter's thinking has moved on and they are testing encrypted messages.

Twitter's direct messages feature is a popular way of talking to strangers without having to provide phone numbers or email addresses. It's a quick way for journalists to communicate with sources privately, for instance.

But Twitter's decision to build an DM option with end-to-end encryption, will mean that the messages would be completely unintelligible to Twitter, or anyone else who does not possess the decryption keys.

Twitter has long maintained a reputation for being a unique platform for politics, uprisings, breaking news, or plain discourse, but without encryption, individuals risk exposing themselves to external parties, especially if they participate in political activities or advocate for various causes. The feature has already been baked into the Twitter app for Android, but it hasn't yet been activated inside a public release. There's been no comments from the company or its spokesperson.

The code for the unreleased encryption option was found in the software's APK files.

So far, Twitter has yet to confirm whether it's working on an end-to-end encrypted messaging feature.
