The five biggest announcements at Microsoft Build 2018

Conference goers check out the demo floor of the Microsoft Build 2017 show at the Washington State Convention Center. This week’s Build 2018 will be held in Seattle for the second year in a row

As part of Microsoft's commitment to trusted, responsible AI products and practices, the company also today announced AI for Accessibility, a new $25 million, five-year program aimed at harnessing the power of AI to amplify human capabilities for more than 1 billion people around the world with disabilities. The Windows Machine Learning platform will help developers develop machine learning models in the Intelligent Cloud and deploy them offline and in high performance to the PC platform, Microsoft said. With Timeline on Microsoft Launcher, it plans to enable cross device app launching experience.

Rather than just a camera peripheral, Project Kinect for Azure will be whole package of sensors.

Microsoft says it's used some of the advances made through HoloLens - which in turn, was informed by the original Kinect - to enhance Project Kinect's spatial understanding, object recognition, skeletal tracking, and more.

Microsoft has also joined hands with Qualcomm for a vision AI platform on Azure IoT edge.

Microsoft's Project BrainWave - its effort to use Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology to provide fast AI processing in Azure - is now in preview in a couple of different forms.

DJI's new SDK for Windows empowers developers to build native Windows applications that can remotely control DJI drones including autonomous flight and real-time data streaming. Azure services will be a big component to the developer platform, powering the machine learning, stream analytics and cognitive services - all of which can be downloaded from the cloud to run locally on the edge (aka non-connected AI).

Microsoft has continued the ritual of announcing Windows 10 numbers at the Build 2018 developer conference. To start, the company is aiming to make it easier for developers to customize experiences in Microsoft Teams with new and updated Teams APIs in the Microsoft Graph, as well as the ability to publish custom apps to the Teams app store. The app will allow PC users access to their phone's contents, including messages, photos, and notifications, right on their Windows 10 desktop. A feature called Timeline tracks what you're doing and lets you find that information later.
