Yemen: 16 Houthi killed in airstrikes in Taiz province

The group of roughly a dozen Green Berets arrived on the Saudi Arabian border with Yemen late previous year, according to the New York Times, which reported the previously undisclosed mission.

In an interview with Tasnim, ranking commander of Yemen's Army General Yahya al-Houthi said if Saudi Arabia continues to kill people of Yemen, the Saudi vessels and sites at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait will become military targets of Yemen's missiles.

A half-dozen officials - from the US military, the Trump administration and European and Arab nations - said the USA commandos are training Saudi ground troops to secure their border.

A half-dozen officials - by Arab and European nations, the Trump government European and the US military - said that the commandos are training ground troops to safeguard their boundary.

Asked about the Times' report, the Pentagon said the U.S.is "there and we are helping them with securing their borders" but did not explicitly acknowledge the Army special forces deployment.

Saudi Arabia, at the head of a coalition of Arab nations, intervened in neighbouring Yemen's civil war in 2015 to support the recognised Yemeni government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi against Shia Houthi rebels.

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat senator, believed the mission was a "purposeful blurring of lines between train and equip missions and combat".

Saudi air defenses shot down on Sunday two ballistic missiles fired by the Iran-backed Houthi militias towards the Kingdom, reported the Saudi Press Agency. The Green Berets are said to be using advanced surveillance equipment to pinpoint Houthi missile launch sites.

During a meeting on Capitol Hill in March, senators pressed Pentagon officials about the military's role in the Saudi-led conflict, demanding to know whether American troops were at risk of entering into hostilities against the Houthis. Those troops have not only been on the ground since late 2017, but are there on a mission to help the Saudi military fight Yemen's Shi'ite Houthi movement.

Robert Karem, assistant secretary of defense for international-security affairs, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 17 that the United States had about 50 military personnel in Saudi Arabia, "largely helping on the ballistic-missile threat".

The arrest is the latest incident in an 11-month Gulf political crisis which has seen a group of Saudi-led countries break all ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism and seeking closer ties with Iran.
