Wells Fargo Championship Round 4

Rory McIlroy: “I Don't Care About The US Open Or The Open”

Jason Day sputtered at the start and finally hit his stride for a 4-under 67 to build a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C., and a chance for his second victory this year.

Wise, 21, was only one behind Day with three holes to play but dropped shots at the 16th and 18th, where he chipped in from off the green for a bogey. He had been scrambling most of the day but was buoyed by his short game, and the tournament felt like it was slipping away from Day and into the hands of a relative unknown.

Jason Day said after the third round at Quail Hollow Club on Saturday that he'd much rather have a great short game than "be the best ball-striker on the planet".

The 30-year-old Australian missed more than half the fairways - including an ugly hook into the water on the par-4 14th - hit just eight greens in regulation and made four bogeys on the day, squandering a three-shot lead on the back nine.

Uihlein had five consecutive birdies from the fifth, an eagle at 10 and added two more birdies at the 14th and 15th as he missed McIlroy's 2015 Quail Hollow record by one shot.

"Your subconscious is sitting there going, 'you're going to fail, you're going to fail, you're going to fail.'"

Day caught his biggest break on 17, where the ball bounced four times and was moving fast when it hit the pin, drawing a huge roar from the crowd.

"I kept on saying to myself, 'no, just forget about those thoughts, keep pushing, keep pushing and give yourself opportunities'". The cut fell at 3 over par.

He never got closer than four behind before three bogeys on the back nine left him nine behind Day at the finish. I'm trying really hard to hit it in the fairway and then trying really hard to get my irons on line. He got up-and-down from the rough right of the green to finish with a par.

It was Day's 12th career win on the PGA Tour. He won the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year after a winless 2017.

Rory McIlroy (T16): After making the cut at T48 and shooting a 66 in Round 3, McIlroy stalled with a 71 on Sunday.

The general tone of Tiger Woods' 2018 comeback has been positive.

Aaron Wise, who shot a final round 3-under 68, and Nick Watney finished tied for second at 10 under.

And as well as those star players performed, they couldn't match Peter Uihlein, who shot 62 after a six-hole stretch that included five birdies and an eagle. Park finished with a two-round total of 11-under 131 for her third LPGA Tour victory.

After Thursday's play was canceled and Friday's began after an 8½-hour rain delay, the tournament was reduced from 72 holes to 36.

Day now heads to TPC Sawgrass where he will attempt to win The Players Championship for a second time in the last three years.
