Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson undergoes emergency brain surgery

But despite the happy scenes, the thoughts of the manager, his staff, players and numerous club's fans were with former rival Fergie, who underwent emergency surgery on Saturday evening following a brain haemorrhage.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimize his recovery".

Ferguson was due to be in the dugout at the Keepmoat Stadium but a Rovers statement read: "Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week".

"The minute a Manchester United player thought he was bigger than the manager, he had to go", Ferguson wrote in his autobiography.

"I am very sad", he told reporters. "Be strong boss", he added. I was hoping it wasn't true.

In his book, Manchester United: The Untold Story the club's former head of security, Ned Kelly, revealed that I was watched 24 hours a day for two weeks. "Sending prayers and love to Cathy and the family".

Ferguson retired five years ago having won a 38 major trophies in just over 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, including 13 Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League twice.

Only six days previously, he had presented Arsenal's Arsene Wenger with a trophy at Old Trafford.

The Scot is good friends with Guardiola, and at one stage the Catalan had looked a contender to replace Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Conte played against Ferguson's United side for Juventus in a number of Champions League clashes and he spoke of their relationship after his team's victory, which came thanks to a first-half goal from Olivier Giroud.
