Gina Haspel sought to withdraw nomination to be Central Intelligence Agency director

Trump's CIA pick lobbies Capitol Hill before confirmation hearing

Earlier on Sunday, the Washington Post reported Haspel had sought to get her nomination withdrawn due to questions about her role in the CIA's interrogation program.

Haspel's offer to withdraw on Friday was prompted by growing concern among her supporters that White House was becoming nervous that the nomination was in trouble, the sources said.

After her offer to withdraw, White House aides worked to reassure her that she had the president's support. But her past role in the CIA's use of brutal interrogation measures on terrorism suspects has generated bipartisan criticism on Capitol Hill, where she is scheduled to answer questions during a confirmation hearing next week.

After Haspel attended a mock hearing for her upcoming confirmation hearing, she said she was "interested" in stepping down as nominee.

The suggestion alarmed White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and legislative affairs director Marc Short, who reportedly rushed to the agency's headquarters in Langley, Virginia, on Friday to meet with Haspel after she left the White House in order to talk her out of pulling out.

Last month, Trump's pick for secretary of veterans affairs, the White House doctor Ronny Jackson, withdrew from consideration after a number of allegations arose concerning his conduct.

Trump learned of the drama Friday, calling officials from his trip to Dallas.

In response, Sanders tweeted out her support of Haspel and suggested that Democrats who oppose the nomination but support women's empowerment are hypocrites. And Trump ancouraged Haspel to continue as his nominee. Many Democrats have said she should be disqualified because she was the chief of base at a covert detention site in Thailand where two terrorism suspects were subjected to waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning.

"Her nomination will not be derailed by partisan critics who side with the ACLU (rights organization) over the Central Intelligence Agency on how to keep the American people safe", he added. "Those who know the true Gina Haspel - who worked with her, who served with her, who helped her confront terrorism, Russian Federation and countless other threats to our nation - they nearly uniformly support her".

She has received robust backing from former intelligence, diplomatic, military and national security officials, who praise her extensive intelligence career. "When the individuals ultimately have a possiblity to see the true Gina Haspel on Wednesday, they will know why she's is really admired and why she's is and will soon be a great leader for this company".
