Disastrous 2nd quarter puts Sixers down 2-0 in series with Celtics

Boston Celtics guard Terry Rozier and Philadelphia 76ers forward Joel Embiid

The pre-series thought here was that the Celtics would do well against Simmons and Embiid of the 76ers, but get hurt by Redick, Dario Saric and Covington.

While his size, athleticism and passing have made up for his lack of shooting for almost the entire season, Simmons' most glaring weakness was on full display and impossible to ignore in Game 2. Celtics fans responded raucously in Game 2, appearing to bring down the building on several occasions. He accounted for five points during the run and helped force four Philadelphia turnovers, which Boston turned into six points. So in honor of his poor performance in Game 2 against Boston, here are three reasons why Thursday marked the worst game of the young career for Simmons, which will hopefully become a learning lesson for the youngster. "I just want to be able to be out there and be physical for us", Anderson said, "and do what I do best, I guess". "So, I came out, did the best I could, gave everything I had, and we came out with a W". Boston led by as many as eight in the third quarter and took the lead for good on Marcus Morris's three with 4:13 to play.

"If I had to do it again, I'd do the same thing", Brown said after the game.

From that point, the Celtics went on an 11-2 run capped off by a Rozier three to take a 99-95 lead with 3:36 to play in the game. The C's had run the Philly shooters off the 3-point line in the opener, and Brett Brown's troops countered wisely in this one.

Brown would go on to play 25 minutes, tallying 13 points and four rebounds off the bench, while helping the C's storm back from a 22-point first-half deficit to edge Philly for a 108-103 win. Redick made two early threes - matching the total makes he had in game one.

JJ Redick had a game-high 23 points while making 5 of 9 three-pointers. Robert Covington had 22 points and Joel Embiid scored 20, but it wasn't enough for the 76ers to overcome the Celtics. In 31 minutes of action, Simmons finished with a humiliating one point on 0-4 shooting. The 76ers' lone loss in the first round came here in Game 2 to Miami but they can ill afford a home defeat at this point, trailing 2-0. Add in the hamstring injury Brown suffered in Game 7 of the Celtics' first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks, and it isn't hard to understand why Boston was a home underdog in Game 1. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown is back and contributing. Tatum, this past year's No. 3 overall pick, is averaging 17.0 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game. If the Celtics keep him running, it wears him out quicker, forcing the 76ers to adjust.

Simmons said he was "overthinking" in the game.

Celtics' guard Marcus Smart entered Thursday's contest shooting an abysmal 2-for-16 from deep in the playoffs thus far. Philadelphia has seen the over go 4-0 in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 4-1 in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
