Lib Dems Hold SLDC In Local Elections

Mrs May has been campaigning around the country this week including in Manchester on Monday

Out of the 14 seats up for grabs across 13 wards, 9 have gone to the Conservatives, 4 to Labour and 1 to the Liberal Democrats.

The fortunes of the main parties were different inside and outside London.

LABOUR has won another landslide at the Town Hall - winning every seat bar one at yesterday's (Thursday's) boroughwide council elections.

However, the Conservatives ended up with three fewer wards after losing three to Labour, one to the Liberal Democrats and gaining one vacant ward.

Mr Corbyn said the party was "ready for a general election whenever it comes".

Barnet councillor Barry Rawlings said Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the NEC were responsible for the inactive response of the party against Ken Livingstone's anti-Semitic comments in 2016.

However, while the Labour Party did not make significant gains in Cornwall's local elections last May, it was a different story in the General Election the following month.

In 2017 the Tory share of the vote was 48%, with Labour second with 27% and the Lib Dems on 23%.

Cllr Rosemary Carroll handed the Conservatives overall control of the council, despite comparing an Asian person to a dog.

Labour performed strongly in cities while the Conservatives did better than expected in towns which voted to leave the European Union in the Brexit referendum of 2016.

However in her victory speech, Lib Dem interim leader, and Highgate councillor Liz Morris said while Labour had won the polling, they hadn't won the "hearts and minds of residents".

Several Labour MPs, including John McDonnell, Dawn Butler and Sadiq Khan backtracked on their initial boastful expectations from the local elections.

"One of the reasons they did will is because people in Plymouth are anxious about the government policies about defence and that is an issue that will influence people in Cornwall as well".

"Obviously, I am disappointed at any places where we lost a bit of ground, but if you look at the overall picture, Labour gained a lot of seats across the whole country, we gained a lot of votes in places we never had those votes before".

Lloyd Duddridge (pictured far left) missed out on a seat in Bridge by just 11 votes. That plays into the hands of the political organisations which have more money.

He added: "He can also come to tomorrow and apologise to the hundreds of Labour activists in Barnet who have worked their socks off in the past 10 years to try to turn this council into a Labour council because all of our hard work has gone backwards".
