Putting woes leave Woods six behind first-round leader Peterson

His comeback is compelling from a sporting perspective but Tiger Woods' resurgence is like gold dust for golf's PGA Tour

It nearly got even better.

Woods will look to correct his putting woes when his second round gets underway Friday at 7:40 a.m. ET.

One of them is closer to walking away than the other. "I was just hoping I could walk without pain and now I'm out here playing against these guys", Woods said. "It's weird. The greens are slow".

I'm not asking for a major just yet.

Tiger Woods after making a putt on the 12th green during the pro-am of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

There has been a massive buzz in the North Carolina city for the return of the 14-time major victor and Woods didn't disappoint during his pre-tournament hit-out on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

It will also be the first of back-to-back tournaments for Woods, who's also slated to play in the Players Championship next week at TPC Sawgrass.

"I am very thankful", Woods said Wednesday. "If I just make a few putts, I should be two or three under par, which is fine".

"I was a little apprehensive today". The same thing happened again at the long par 5 on No. 10, and then again at No. 16.

While Woods will consume most attention, fans with an eye on the future could do worse than watch Joaquin Niemann.

Woods came up with a couple of big putts though, rolling in a 27-footer for birdie on No 8 and a bender from 17 feet on the over-the-water par-3 17th hole to save par.

"And I got them all back", he said.

Once popular with the gallery because of his utter dominance at a youthful age and really not much else, Woods now is cheered for a variety of reasons.

Woods posted on social media that he was testing a new set of TaylorMade prototypes...

It may not appear it on first glance, but actually fairly well. I've never won The Players Championship (next week); it's a tournament that I would love to win. While John Peterson finished the day at 6 under after Woods had finished, Woods made a point that remains true - he's still right in the thick of this.

Tiger Woods said he put his golf clubs in a closet for 10 days after the Masters and did not swing them once. "We're gonna go to the putting green and regroup and hopefully get better with the putter". "There's going to be probably, I'm guessing 15 guys or so with a chance on Sunday".

Which is good news for Woods and his fans ... speaking of which, were everywhere Thursday.

The highlights of Woods' outing were holes seven and eight. He's part of an intriguing group that also includes Masters champion Patrick Reed, who's also playing his first tournament since Augusta, and 2017 US Open champion Brooks Koepka, who's playing his first solo tournament since January after missing more than three months with a wrist injury. Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, and Patrick Reed are at 20/1.
