Cambridge Analytica shuts down amid scandal over use of Facebook data

New Review for Third-Party Apps on Facebook

The UK based data analytics and political consulting firm has been under fire in various countries for allegedly harvesting data from nearly 87 million Facebook users and leveraging them for political campaigns.

That figure was provided to the attorney general's office by Facebook as part of an ongoing investigation.

While Facebook had previously admitted that almost 5.62 lakh people in India were "potentially affected" by the data breach incident, Cambridge Analytica had claimed that it does not have any Facebook data on Indian citizens.

We will be examining closely the details of the announcements of the winding down of Cambridge Analytica and the status of its parent company.

According to Emerdata's Companies House record in the United Kingdom, its business involves "data processing, hosting and related activities", while Alexander Nix, the suspended CEO of CA, was appointed as a director in February, only for this to be terminated in April.

Over the past months, Cambridge Analytica and its associated organisations have been embroiled in allegations that the Facebook profiles of millions of Americans had been wrongly harvested and used by the company, while a separate undercover investigation by Britain's Channel 4 News pointed to some of the unsavoury tactics that the company touted as some of the means that it used to help political campaigns achieve their goals.

According to Facebook, Kogan told them that the information gathered from the app would be used for academic purposes, but it was instead given to Cambridge Analytica - in violation of platform policy. Reacting to the news, senior IT Ministry officials in New Delhi said the Indian Government will continue with its enquiry into the Cambridge Analytica data leak issue.

Asked by Canadian lawmakers about how the closure of the businesses would affect the investigation and any possible sanctions, Damian Collins, the chairman of the digital, culture, media and sport committee, said: "It doesn't change our inquiry at all". "Despite the company's precarious financial condition, Cambridge Analytica intends to fully meet its obligations to its employees, including with respect to notice periods, severance terms, and redundancy entitlements".

Attorney general Josh Stein announced Wednesday that's how many people are affected by Cambridge Analytica and other third parties.

It collected information on tens of millions of people and their Facebook friends, even those who did not download the app themselves. At SCL's Washington, DC office, a man declined to answer questions from a Reuters reporter. Initial funding for Cambridge Analytica came from Republican financier Robert Mercer, who invested at least $10 million in the company as it sought to help exclusively GOP candidates across a range of US congressional and state legislative elections beginning in 2014.

Just over a week ago, the company held a press conference that all national issues across the world, including in India, involving SCL Elections would be handled by an independent investigation.

He called the revelations about the way Facebook users' information was shared by Facebook with third-party groups "discouraging and alarming".
