'No panic' on flight after window crack

Lieutenant Tammie Jo Shults was one of the first women to fly Navy tactical aircraft

The Dallas-based carrier said Flight 957 landed in Cleveland just after 10:30 a.m. due to a cracked window although there was no depressurization to the cabin. "We didn't know if it was going to crack open".

Another passenger reported that the cracked window, located at an emergency exit, shattered mid-air, according to Dans Deals.

In the latest incident, "the aircraft maintained pressurization, as there are multiple layers of panes in each window". Data from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating Wednesday's incident, suggests that these types of window failures in Boeing 737's are rare - only 26 times in the plane's worldwide service history.

There were no reports of injuries after Flight 957 landed safely. Riordan died of injuries suffered after she was partially sucked out.

Passengers took pictures of the broken window and posted them online today to the various social media sites.

Cal DeNyse, who was on the Southwest flight that was diverted Wednesday, said that although he heard other passengers talking about last month's episode, most were fairly calm. The airline was trying to make arrangements to get the 76 passengers to Newark on another plane. One passenger was killed on another Southwest flight after a part from a blown-up engine broke a window on April 17. Southwest said it has not found any cracks on fan blades inspected since the accident.

The engine damage on Flight 1380 spurred lawmakers in Washington to include an amendment focusing on engine safety in its five-year FAA reauthorization legislation.

Southwest has estimated a drop in sales as a result of the high-profile accident will cost it between $US50 million and $US100 million. The pilots also had to land the plane at around 190 miles per hour, faster than the usual landing of around 160 miles per hour, because they had to keep their flaps angled low. Seventy-six people were on board the flight.
