WhatsApp founder leaves the company after privacy disputes with Facebook

WhatsApp Co-Founder Leaving Facebook After Reported Clashes Over Security

WhatsApp founder Jan Koum is leaving the company over disagreements with Facebook about privacy and encryption. He will also step down from Facebook's board of directors, but his exact date of departure is undisclosed.

When Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014, both Koum and his colleague, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, signaled their strict opposition to allowing adverts into their service, the way it happens on Facebook, which generates fortunes through online advertising.

Koum: 'Time for me to move on.'

I've been blessed to work with such an incredibly small team and see how a insane amount of focus can produce an app used by so many people all over the world.

5- A continued discord over the inclusion of ads on WhatsApp, coupled with Facebook's repeated attempts of weakening the apps strong encryption, is something that has probably led to Koum putting in his papers.

In his goodbye note, posted on Facebook on Monday, Koum said he planned to collect "rare air-cooled Porsches". "And I'll still be cheering WhatsApp on just from the outside", he said.

In response to a request for comment, Facebook directed CNN to Koum's farewell post. "Those values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp", said Zuckerberg in a statement to Newsweek.

WhatsApp, with 1.5 billion monthly users, is the largest messaging service in the world. With this move, WhatsApp encryption was weakened and businesses could chat directly with customers and read their messages. In March he endorsed the #deletefacebook social media campaign that took off after reports of Cambridge Analytica using Facebook's user data came to light. Still, despite Koum's kind departing words, his exit may be due to the notion that his creation is being turned into a perverse parody of itself. The same year also saw WhatsApp beginning to share its data with parent company Facebook, in a limited manner.

Koum also made it clear some time ago that he would take a firm stand against Facebook if the company's obsession with profits demanded amendments to the way WhatsApp operates, obviously hinting at the app's devotion to the protection of users' rights.

On Tuesday, May 1, Zuckerberg announced that WhatsApp would soon be bringing group video calling to the popular communication app, making it possible for folks to have face-to-face conversations with multiple people at once. It's been a wobbly road, filled with apologies and bromides about protecting user data until the next problem is revealed.

- In November, WhatsApp introduced Read Receipts, which showed a blue tick mark to the senders when their messages are read by recipients.

3- Despite Facebook's apparent promise to leave WhatsApp alone after the sale, the social media company gradually started interfering with WhatsApps working.
