Facebook adds 'Clear History' option amid privacy scandal

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg makes the keynote speech at F8 theFacebook's developer conference Tuesday

Shortly before Zuckerberg's keynote began, the company announced a new privacy feature that will, once launched, allow users to clear their browsing history on Facebook, including what they've clicked on and which websites they've visited.

The committee has since threatened Mr Zuckerberg with a formal summons to give evidence himself, and his appearance at F8 is likely to be closely monitored by lawmakers and regulators in both the United States and UK. For first time in several weeks, Zuckerberg went before a public audience and didn't apologize for the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a political data-mining firm accessed data from as many as 87 million Facebook accounts for the objective of influencing elections. "The hard part was figuring out how to move forward on everything else we need to do too".

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has a message for developers: you should keep building apps and tools for users, even as the social network tries to work through privacy probes and hate-speech hurdles.

For Zuckerberg, that's meant repeated apologies to users and lawmakers, two days of congressional questioning about whether and how the company protects its users' privacy.

Facebook is also reviewing applications overall as well as auditing those that accessed large amounts of data to make sure access isn't abused, he said. Facebook has been doing damage control ever since - at least until today. This is already what other dating apps that rely on Facebook data do, such as Tinder.

But after several weeks on the defensive over the scandal, Zuckerberg was clearly back in techno-enthusiasm mode.

Facebook is launching a dating feature. The company continues to implement tweaks aimed at making users feel more comfortable with things, including this new opt-out feature.

Mr. Zuckerberg may be traveling overseas to speak with members of the European Parliament this month, Politico reported last week, and Mr. Collins' committee "would like Mr. Zuckerberg to come to London during his European trip", his letter said. It's "for building real long-term relationships, not just hookups", Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg also addressed the recent departure of Jan Koum, the co-founder and CEO of messaging platform WhatsApp, which Facebook acquired for $19.3 billion in 2014.

The event will be used as a stage to share more information on the firm's plans to improve the service in the wake of criticism over its data privacy policies.

The $199 device, called the Oculus Go, is going on sale Tuesday.

Oculus Go is different from other virtual reality devices that require smartphones or a cord tethered to a personal computer to cast people into artificial worlds or show three-dimensional videos. Facebook is counting on the Oculus Go to widen the audience for VR.
