Rutland Regional receives an 'A' for patient safety

Central Maine Medical Center

The Leapfrog Group, a leading national nonprofit watchdog on hospital quality and safety, today announced that EvergreenHealth received an "A" for patient safety in the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.

Sacred Heart received a B in the assessment, as did Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill Medical Center on South Jackson Street in Pottsville; Easton Hospital and LVH-Hazleton earned Cs; and LVH-Schuylkill Medical Center on East Norwegian Street in Pottsville got a D. In 2016 and 2017, Rutland Regional Medical Center was the recipient of Healthcare's Most Wired® award for the exceptional way the hospital uses technology to build patient engagement, specifically in how the patient is afforded electronic access to their care team.

"At EvergreenHealth, our more than 5,000 employees, providers and volunteers are dedicated to what we call our Community of Absolute Safety", said EvergreenHealth CEO Bob Malte.

Leapfrog's expert panel of doctors assign grades to approximately 2,700 hospitals twice a year.

"We support frequent monitoring for safety by Leapfrog, which provides simple, understandable "grades" for this important measurement of quality", Dr. Brian Nester, LVHN's president and CEO, said in a news release.

Rhode Island, Hawaii and Idaho took the highest marks for patient safety in Leapfrog's new grades, while MA and Virginia rounded out the top five list of states based on the percentage of "A" hospitals. Until this round of safety rankings, Duke University's research and teaching hospital in Durham had delivered straight A's for the past three years, whereas WakeMed Cary had been awarded A's, and one B, since last getting a C in the spring of 2015.

Martha Jefferson was given high marks for low rates of infection; safety and error-prevention strategies; and qualified personnel.

WakeMed's chief quality and medical staff officer, West Paul, said WakeMed expected to be downgraded this time because the Cary hospital experienced an increase in intestinal bacteria infections, particularly among older patients from area nursing homes. "We are so proud to have earned this honor, and we strive every day to continue meeting these nationally recognized standards".

The Spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are now live! That is according to the non-profit group Leapfrog. The hospital recently opened the doors to the new Edwards Cancer Center and Sterling Center Women's Health facilities.
