Jewish leaders describe Corbyn meeting as 'disappointing'

The Jewish community demanded'enough is enough in a protest warning Labour must tackle the anti Semitism problem

They said Corbyn did not agree to any of their proposals during the Tuesday meeting. "We welcome the fact that Mr Corbyn's words have changed, but it is action by which the Jewish community will judge him and the Labour party". "Their concerns are not 'smears.' Jews belong in the Labour Party and we are utterly committed to making it a safe and welcoming place for them".

Ahead of the meeting today, the Jewish groups said they were hoping to see "action not words".

Corbyn's statement following the encounter seemed as if he had been at a different meeting.

By contrast, Corbyn on hailed the talks with the British Jewish leaders, saying he was "absolutely committed to rooting out anti-Semitism from our party and our society".

Citing last month's "Enough is Enough" demonstration outside Parliament as expressing the community's "hurt and anger about the level of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, and Jeremy Corbyn's failure to take strong action against it", the statement then repeated the six areas of "concrete action" that "represent the minimum level" of expected action.

A number of MPs also launched impassioned pleas in the Commons last week for him to step up and take action on the issue as they revealed some of the shocking abuse they have faced.

Or indeed while Mr Corbyn's left-wing friend and ally Ken Livingstone remains in the Labour Party.

Manson said while it was a "misery and tragedy" that some MPs had "received nasty anti-Semitic comments", there was no proof they had been made by Labour supporters, pushing the blame onto right-wingers.

The Jewish Leadership Council serves as an umbrella organization, bringing together major Jewish organizations to ensure the continuity of the British Jewish community.

The meeting was set up after a demonstration by Jewish groups outside parliament over what they felt was Corbyn's insufficient action on the issue. In 2016 he said he regrets saying that. Dozens were expelled but many others accused of these actions were allowed to stay or were readmitted.

In his Evening Standard article, Mr Corbyn said that anti-Zionism was not in itself anti-Semitic but he acknowledged that "individuals on the fringes of the movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people can stray into anti-Semitic views".

Writing in the Evening Standard, Corbyn said: "We have not done enough to get to grips with the problem, and the Jewish community and our Jewish members deserve an apology".

Days later, he attended a Passover meal hosted by a Jewish far-left group that has dismissed claims of anti-Semitism in Labour as "faux-outrage" and called for Israel to be "disposed of". And it's probably fair to say it won't be resolved as long as Mr Corbyn is leader.

Many Labour critics trace the party's anti-Semitism problem to thousands of members joining from Corbyn's hard-left Momentum group.
