Concerns Over E.Coli Outbreak Continue

CDC Throw All Romaine Away Washing Won’t Do the Trick

Officials have asked consumers to confirm the source of romaine lettuce, and not to purchase or eat any if the source can not be confirmed. Guam's division of Environmental Health warns the public of an E Coli outbreak on the mainland.

To keep yourself and your family safe, the CDC recommends avoiding any romaine lettuce products that could be contaminated.

The industry is now working with regulators, scientists and food safety experts to determine what more might be done to strengthen the program to prevent future outbreaks, the LGMA's release states. The CDC and the FDA now has investigators all over the country, and in Yuma, actively looking for the source of E. Coli contamination.

"We're not so much interested in who as why", Alameda told Western Farm Press.

Also, Il Vicino Wood Oven Pizza posted on Facebook to say they would be eliminating their romaine for the time being. Now, however, it includes whole-head lettuce after several people at an Alaskan correctional facility were infected. Women seem to be the most vulnerable to this infection, as 70 percent of cases reported are female patients.

The CDC says the E. coli outbreak now affects people in 16 states - including Missouri.

The CDC hasn't put out their latest numbers for this week yet.

The Centers for Disease Control said the US cases involve the potentially deadly strain of E. coli known as O157:H7; 31 people have been hospitalized, including five who developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been linked to this outbreak.

"This outbreak we're seeing a higher hospitalization rate than usual." notes Behm. Signs and symptoms of the illness include diarrhea that can be bloody, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. While that can sometimes do the trick if the bacteria is on the lettuce portion, CDC officials say that the E. coli bacteria are going much deeper than that. The appeal by the CDC goes to the public, retailers, and restaurants. Of those infected, 31 were hospitalized, including five people who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.
