Southwest Captain, Former Navy Pilot, Praised for Calm Amid Catastrophe

Southwest Airlines Co. confirmed Friday it has sent $5,000 checks to passengers aboard a flight that made an emergency landing this week after an engine failed, killing a passenger. NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said Wednesday that investigators found no pieces of the window inside the cabin. Specifically, engines with more than 30,000 total cycles from new must complete inspections within 20 days. "Finally when we ... came to a halt, of course, the entire crowd was (in) tears and people crying and we were just thankful to be alive".

A passenger was partially sucked out of the aircraft as hull damage caused decompression.

Jennifer Riordan was identified as the woman killed on the Southwest Airlines flight.

After the emergency landing, Shults personally spoke to nearly all passengers, who described her as acting calm and collected. "It was really excellent team work between all of them to try to get Jennifer back in safe and keep everybody else safe at the same time", Mackey said.

As media reports proliferate about Shults' heroism, Thompson said, "she wants people to know that God was there with her" on Flight 1380, "that he helped her in getting control of that plane and landing that plane. I'm sure they can take over, '" McCullough says.

The airline announced Sunday that 40 flights are cancelled as crews conduct "accelerated" fan-blade inspections.

Metal fatigue is not something that could be seen at a glance, and because it was internal, even a careful maintenance inspection from outside the engine may have missed it, he said. While speaking about this accident one of the passenger's said that it was the "most scariest experience" of his life.

Federal officials recovered the airplane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder. CFM, a joint venture of General Electric and the French company Safran Aircraft Engines, said it also recommended inspections of all other fan blades when they reach 20,000 cycles, and repeating the inspections every 3,000 cycles, which it said, "represents about two years in service". The administration had been under pressure to deal with this issue following a similar incident onboard another Southwest Airlines flight a year ago, although no one suffered an injury on that flight.

The order, called an air-worthiness directive, would require an ultrasonic inspection within the next six months of the fan blades on all CFM56-7B engines that have accrued a certain number of takeoffs.
