Palestinians stream for protests to Gaza tent camps

Rights groups say Israel's open-fire regulations are unlawful because soldiers can use potentially lethal force against unarmed protesters.

The injuries were sustained during a mass protest Friday on Gaza's sealed border with Israel, the third in as many consecutive Fridays.

Organizers call on the demonstrators to burn Israeli flags and raise the Palestinian ones.

A Palestinian protestor prepares to set fire on Israeli flags on April 10, 2018 at the site of protests on the Israel-Gaza border east of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.

He said medics in the area also responded to those injured by tear gas used by Israeli soldiers. The spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces has confirmed that Israeli troops are deploying tear gas and using live fire in order to disperse protesters at five points along the security fence.

Marchers protest contrary to a decade-old blockade and claim the things that they state is that a "right of return" of Palestinian refugees to what is now Israel.

Thirty-four Palestinians have been killed and thousands wounded by Israeli forces since March 30, according to the Hamas-run interior ministry in Gaza.

Israel deems the demonstrations an effort by Hamas, the Islamist group that exercises de facto control over Gaza, to stoke Palestinian hostility toward it and provide cover for potential attacks across the border fence.

Palestinians are streaming to tent camps along Gaza's border with Israel for the third of what are to be weekly mass protests until mid-May.

Israel says it is doing what it must to defend its border, and to stop any of the protesters getting across the fence.

Since late March, 27 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded by army fire during such rallies.

The idea of mass protests was initially floated by social media activists, but was later co-opted by Hamas, which avowedly seeks Israel's destruction, with the backing of smaller terror groups.

Israel and Egypt have enforced a blockade since Hamas, an Islamic militant group, overran the territory in 2007.

That is the day Palestinians will mark the 70th anniversary of the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe", when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced amid violence culminating in war between newly created Israel and its Arab neighbors in May 1948.

The army said Palestinians placed an explosive device along the border area and detonated it against an army engineering vehicle.

Tensions have flared since the beginning of the protests.

In recent days the Israeli military has displayed video footage in which the frontier fence is seen being cut and breached, with, Israel says, explosives planted there to target its troops. Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said one Gazan was killed and another seriously wounded in the strike.
