Assembly Against Gun Violence

Central students walked out of school at 10 a.m. Friday to push for gun control

Friday marks 19 years since the deadly Columbine High School shooting, which took the lives of 12 students and a teacher.

"There's gun violence in the community and this is the one place where our students are safe - the schools", said Kennedy Middle School librarian Sara Attleson.

"We're fighting for stricter gun laws and less gun violence", Maslow-Shields said. A large number of state troopers were also on hand.

The protest marked the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado.

High school students from across Arizona occupied the House and Senate lobbies and the governor's office at the state Capitol Friday in the latest protest against gun violence.

Many students in East Tennessee organized demonstrations on National Walkout Day.

Outside the White House, scores of young protesters sat in silence while they listened to the names of gun violence victims read aloud.

Students at West High School told 10News the walkout lasted about 45 minutes.

"I think that's extremely special because they sent us a banner when our shooting happened", said Hayley Siegel, a junior.

Students from four other high schools in the county also attended the event.

After the speakers, Saint Agnes students wrote on a large sign outside the school, which said "I walk out because..." Even though their main focus has been on school shootings, they hope any changes they influence will affect more than just schools. "We know the elected officials aren't doing anything so it's time for the students who are adults and nearly adults, who are going to go up and be the elected officials some day, to actually do something about it".

As a result, Forest High School's walk out was cancelled.

"There's something about this generation that gets it, about the fact that their voice matters and about the fact that they should care about the future of this country", said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, who went out to support the students.

"It's not fair", she said. "It's our job as adults to fix this mess that we got them into".
