Pentagon: No civilian casualties in Syria strikes

UN team shot at in Syria while visiting suspected Douma chemical weapons attack sites

Le Drian said two weeks of "obstruction" by Russian Federation and Syria "is damaging the quality of the investigation" and is probably aimed at allowing unspecified perpetrators to "make proof and material evidence disappear".

The Russia intervention in Syria has been nearly entirely successful - Bashar al-Assad has won the war, and controls all the big cities and most of the country's "useful" land.

He said it was unlikely that the USA or allies would gain much access to the sites where the Syrian government reportedly conducted chemical attacks on its own people.

She added, "Administration and congressional officials said the hawkish Mr. Bolton is not expected to defer to the defense secretary; already, neoconservative members of the Republican foreign policy establishment have started to air concerns that Mr. Mattis is ceding strategic territory to Iran and Russian Federation in Syria".

Zammar, a Syrian-born German, was a key member of a Hamburg jihadist cell that included three of the September 11 suicide pilots.

He also said that the U.S., British, and French air strikes last week destroyed three targets tied to Syria's weapons program, including a large research center in Damascus. The U.S. has some 2,000 special forces embedded with the SDF.

Both sides agree that three facilities designated by the coalition as targets were hit during the April 14 attack; but to add substance to its claim of overall success, the Russian defense ministry added seven other Syrian airbases as purported additional targets of the coalition attack.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry says that "red tape" and concerns over safety have stopped OPCW inspectors carrying out their investigation into the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria. Trump voters in this poll are less conflicted on this question: by 43% to 34%, they reject any United States responsibility to take action in the Syrian civil war - but, like the rest of the country, they overwhelmingly support the missile strikes.

On April 19, OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said United Nations security experts had come under fire in the town when they arrived in an attempt to assess the situation.

In response to the attack, President Trump, along with the United Kingdom and France, launched a series of military strikes that successfully targeted three locations that made up the heart of Assad's weapons program. Douma is a rebel-held plot of land in Syria's capital of Damascus.

Their destination was Jarablus, a town under shared Turkish and Syrian opposition control near the Syria-Turkey border. The use of chemical weapons against civilians is illegal under worldwide law, particularly the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Dreid said it was not clear why the deal appeared to have fallen through.

The United States said on Thursday that while there were no signs that the Syrian government was preparing to launch a chemical weapons attack, they could still launch limited assaults in the future.

Journalists visiting Douma on a government-organized tour Monday did not report any security threats.

Because of this, OPCW set up fact-finding missions to go to Syria and figure out if the reports of chemical weapons use were true.

Speaking last weekend, Prime Minister Theresa May said there was "no practicable alternative" than to use force to deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.

"Indonesia underlines the need for all parties to respect worldwide laws, and norms, in particular the (United Nations) charter on global peace and security", the minister said in an official press statement over the weekend, continuing a line of persistent objections over the unauthorised use of force. Iraq has carried out airstrikes in Syria against the group in the past.
