Former New York Mayor Giuliani to join Trump legal team

Rudy Giuliani joins Trump legal team hopes to end Russia probe in ‘a week or two

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani arrives at Trump Tower on another day of meetings for President-elect Donald Trump November 22, 2016 in New York.

The panel suggested that Giuliani joining Trump's legal team was part of an effort to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, to ultimately fire special counsel Mueller.

Trump has been mulling for weeks whether to do so, veering between wanting to meet with Mueller to moving away from the idea, especially after the home, offices and hotel room of his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, were raided this month.

Giuliani joins a legal team headed by Jay Sekulow.

As recently as Wednesday, the president again denounced special counsel Robert Mueller's work.

CNN's Chris Cuomo, likewise, noted on New Day Friday the advantages for Trump of bringing the former mayor on board.

"I'm not involved in anything about those issues". His legal team has been told by Mueller that the president is not a target of the investigation, suggesting he's not in imminent criminal jeopardy.

Giuliani, a former prosecutor, has been appointed along with south Florida husband-and-wife defense lawyers Martin and Jane Raskin.

"This is a hoax", Mr. Trump said.

But the President's team has expressed similar optimism in the past, only to be angered and disappointed when their expectations didn't pan out.

Giuliani has been an avid supporter of Trump whom he has known for decades.

He also acknowledged he was in touch with FBI officials during the 2016 presidential campaign and said the bureau's rank and file were "boiling" over about its handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

"It's too early for me to say that", Giuliani replied, when asked whether a Trump interview is unlikely to happen. Some Trump allies are hopeful that Giuliani will be able to elicit a different reaction - if only because he'll approach the talks differently himself.

He told the Post that Mueller should be allowed to finish his investigation. "You need to rethink this.' That's a very, very small group of people", Cuomo said.

Sekulow praised Giuliani for being a great friend to the president "for a long time".

Look no further than the campaign, when Trump expelled the buttoned-up Paul Manafort, an establishment Republican, and went with the far-right Steve Bannon, who let the candidate be himself near the end of what seemed to be a doomed campaign. Giuliani, meanwhile, faithfully made the rounds on television defending Trump.
