Inspirational Final Finisher at Boston Marathon

Sarah Sellers right shocked the field to claim a second place finish at the Boston Marathon

In foul weather, Desiree Linden abandoned her planning and made up her mind to drop out of the Boston Marathon. He is Japan's first Boston Marathon victor since 1987.

Canada's Krista Duchene was third, with a total of seven Americans in the women's top 10 and - for the second straight year - six in the men's.

"If you're a marathoner everyone always asks you, 'have you run Boston?' So in Sarah's case now she can say 'yes, oh and by the way, I was second", Pilkington said. "Anything can happen, you run by feel, I didn't look at my watch the entire race", she said.

But a broken bone in her foot saw her hang up her shoes for a full year and by the time she was fine to pound the pavement, her priority was completing medical school. Linden, who said she felt "miserable" early on in the race and even contemplated dropping out, waited up for her. "If they had been regular conditions, it might have been a little bit tougher to beat some of the competition", Kawauchi told reporters after the race. The winning time of 2:15:58 and was the slowest since Jack Fultz overcame temperatures in the high 90s to win the "Run for the Hoses" in 1976.

"This is a game changer for Sarah, in just her second marathon", Pilkington said, according to the Weber State website.

And she didn't know what she could have done better.

"I was completely shocked, I am still shocked", she said.

"I had no anticipations of winning $75,000", she told the Globe. She's smarter than I am in those things.

"My brother Ryan, he made a decision to sign up for it last fall, so I thought it'd be cool to come out and run it", said Sellers. Linden won the slowest Boston since 1978.

For elite runners and weekend warriors alike, the race distance can be a bad barometer. She will sometimes stick to a selected pace and become a human metronome all the way to the finish, with her first and second halves looking nearly identical. From 22 miles on, she pushed her pace.

A flurry of unknown US marathoners such as Sarah Sellers (a full-time nurse from Arizona), Rachel Hyland (a full-time Spanish teacher from Massachusetts) and Jessica Chichester (a full-time nurse in New York City who didn't even start with the elite women) ended up being the second, fourth and fifth place finishers overall and the U.S.'s top four.

Wearing a white windbreaker that was drenched and billowing in the wind, Kirui slowed and stumbled across the Copley Square finish line in second, 2:25 back, followed by Shadrack Biwott and three other US men. "It was nice to get it right down Boylston this time".
