IBF Won't Sanction GGG-Martirosyan

Middleweight boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has been suspended for six months for a failed test for steroids, pushing the date for a rematch with Gennady Golovkin further back.

Alvarez tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Clenbuterol twice in February, and the results forced him to withdraw from his highly anticpated rematch with Gennady Golovkin.

In a statement, Alvarez's promoters, Golden Boy Promotions said they accepted the sanction and indicated they aimed to reschedule the Golovkin rematch for September. It's a good show for L.A. Cinco De Mayo.

Golovkin never stopped training and clearly has no interest in cutting Alvarez any slack, nor does he give much credence to Alvarez's stated explanation for two positive drug tests.

Overnight the IBF of which Golovkin holds their respective world middleweight title, spoke how to ESPN saying they would not approve of the fight and would have to consider stripping Golovkin.

Crucially, however, the second six months have been suspended because Alvarez co-operated with the NSAC.

Golovkin has said he hopes to fight Álvarez in September, provided the Mexican's temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission has been lifted by then.

If Golovkin goes ahead with the bout against Martirosyan, the IBF said it would invoke its rule 5.H, which states, "If a champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within his prescribed weight limit, the title will be declared vacant whether the champion wins or loses the bout".

The ruling means Alvarez, who did not attend the hearing, will be free to fight again in August - raising the possibility of a rescheduled Golovkin fight in September. "And our guy is in the gym and ready to fight".

"I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity". Pictured: Gennady Golovkin (green trunks) celebrates after his middleweight championship bout against Canelo Alvarez (not pictured) at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, Sep.
