For the third year in a row, the Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling sports coupe. Ford said it sold almost 126,000 Mustang coupes and convertibles in 2017 across 146 different countries.

Of the almost 126 000 vehicles registered worldwide, Ford reported 81 866 of those were registered in the United States, meaning just over one-third of all Mustang registrations are occurring in export markets. Ford points out the China was a particularly strong foreign market, with 7,125 new registrations making the Mustang the bestselling sporty 2-door among Chinese drivers.

"As a Ford Performance model that's raced around the world, it's fitting that Australia's most popular sports auto should be on our race tracks".

Hundreds of Mustang enthusiasts will converged at Ford World Headquarters this morning in honor of National Mustang Day.

Although the most recent model years have introduced a new line-up of EcoBoost turbocharged engines, smaller in capacity and more economical, some parts of the pony auto charm are still old-school. "It could only be found on TV or the Internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to São Paulo".

Mustang and Camaro-bodied cars have been competing against each other in NASCAR's second-tier series - now called Xfinity - since 2013, but this will be the first time that the two pony cars have ever faced off in Cup. It's the first time that the Mustang name has been in the top series for stock vehicle racing. 'Mustang always has been about affordable performance, which can be traced to innovations we've made competing in racing, like Nascar.

The 2018 model Mustang, which was also unveiled on Tuesday, was deemed by Ford the flawless fit for the Gen2 regulations.

This will be Ford's fourth different Cup model in NASCAR's modern era (1972-present), following Thunderbird, Taurus and Fusion. A public unveiling of the finished product will soon follow.

Legendary team owner Dick Johnson said the return of the Mustang will be the ideal way to signal Ford's factory rebirth in the sport.

The first series points race for Mustang will be the Daytona 500 on February 17, 2019.

Ford Australia's level of support will extend to supplying technical assistance and licensing agreements to run the Mustang locally, rather than financial input in either team.

"Mustang is Ford's halo brand and with its 54th birthday it keeps recording more milestones, but I think having a Mustang Supercar is going to be a very significant one for the brand in this country".
