Barbara Bush in "failing health"

United in Concern, Politicos From Both Sides of the Aisle Send Support to Barbara Bush

Former US first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" after a series of hospitalizations and "has decided not to seek additional medical treatment", her husband's office said in a statement Sunday.

Bush has been in and out of hospital recently and is now in "failing health", according to a family spokesman.

"[Mrs. Bush] has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care", said Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the family.

Chelsea Clinton, whose father Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election, tweeted that she was "k$3 eeping Barbara Bush and her family in my heart and prayers".

Bush, who has been married to former President George H.W. Bush for 73 years, is being cared for at her Houston home and does not want to return to the hospital.

Barbara Bush visits during round 2 of the 2016 Champions Tour Insperity Invitational, The Woodlands Country Club, The Woodlands, Texas.

She is also known for her sense of humor, once joking that her husband couldn't keep a job, but that, at least, he wasn't boring. She is 92 years old.

The office did not elaborate on the nature of Bush's health issues. "I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" Barbara Pierce was born in NY and met her future husband at age 16. They got engaged right before he left to fight in World War II as a Navy pilot.

ET obtained a statement from the Bush family on Sunday, which was later also posted on Twitter, after she had been hospitalized several times in recent months.

Smith College awarded Barbara Bush with an honorary degree in 1989.
